Oceanside half IM

Friday, March 30th, 2007

Off to Oceanside this afternoon for Ralph’s half IM*! I’ll be cheering and Mike will be speedy! Wish good thoughts for him!

* yes, I know it has a new name. no, I don’t really care.

feeling like Lisa

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

It’s a week off for me — the doc’s orders were no swimming, biking, or running for a week as the gash is sealed shut with steristrips. I can do abs and upper body stuff though. It’s tough when I was working on getting into a more regular pattern of working out, but as I’ve learned I really should let things heal right the first time. On that note I should remember to actually schedule and go to the foot MRI soon ;-)

But feeling like Lisa… yes, I am. (Pre-knee) I was doing a few short runs, and getting them back to a frequency point. And… I posted a mtn biking picture at www.yourmtb.com and it’s currently one of the featured/front page pics :)

still alive and playin’

I know it has been a bit of a break from tri posts, but I’ve been riding and swimming as much as (maybe more than, with swimming) ever. It’s just been with less of a goal or focus. With an eye on enjoying it, and staying in shape and happy.

Mike and I took our bikes out to Red Rock Canyon by Vegas last weekend. Only road about 15 miles (I was definitely having a heavy legs day), but then we took a fun little hike and played on the rocks. It was beautiful and fun and great! Here’s a pic from during our hike:

And then we went to the Treasure Island Wedding Chappel! Where we watched my cousin get married :P

(kinda blurry… oh well).

Before we headed out to Vegas I also got in a ride on the mtn bike, which also rocked! And tonight I’m somewhat craving a run, although I work until 7.

But I’m about ready to find a new goal… I am going to (again) pass on the “post Ironman guess I’ll do a 50k and then 50 miler” feeling. My foot was acting up a bit, and now I’m not in the same running shape. To avoid pushing my foot back to sore I’m going to just up the running slowly, starting again.

I’d love to do Baja Travesia 2007. I’m working on the team for it already, and hopefully something will play out there. Or will it be another IM next year? Or maybe a cyclocross or mountain bike race? Perhaps I will get involved with Girls on the Run, or something similar, which I’ve thought about for a while. So many fun options, but I really do want to find a focus or a goal. As much as I like training for fun, I like having a bigger purpose helping me!

and we’re off!

I hope Vineman is ready for me and Lisa! I’m off to pick her up and our journey continues with a fun drive up north!

Only 3 days, 17:23:40 to go til Vineman’s start!

My bike is cleaned, my trifuel jersey ready to be packed, and my toenails are painted grape colors.

Now to just do the actual packing!!

OMG so sexy! (and a great weekend)

So my bike is about ready for Vineman…

(click here for a bigger pic. You can ignore the mess in the picture… we are also in the middle of moving and have to be done the weekend after Vineman so you can imagine the craziness)

I still need an adapter for the presta valve so that I can pump up the tires with my emergency CO2 pump or with my floor pump (as neither fit in the openings on those wheels). Other outstanding issues are that Trader Joe’s stopped carrying the fruit leather I like to eat while riding, but I have a few so will just make do. Also, the bike rack I was supposed to borrow I went to pickup today. And found it was missing straps to attach it to the car. The bike shop boys are not happy (a lady returned it that way and they didn’t notice). So I’m looking for another one… I have some people to ask and have my fingers crossed. But goggles – check, bike – check, bike and run shoes – check. Looks like we are (almost) ready!

This weekend has basically rocked. Outside tris a friend turned 29 and we definitely celebrated on Friday night. I made it home and into bed by 2:45ish AM though. Got up at 6:30 for an easy 30 mile ride yesterday morning — it was nice and easier than I expect on that lack of sleep, and generally felt good. Except I noticed that my cables for the front derailer were having issues — like bubbling the bar tape where the housing went under. John has fixed it for me though (and replaced the old cable housing with red, adding some sexxiness to the bike.

And somewhat outside tris I went to a BBQ at Mike Donia’s (a very speedy IMer and other racer… like IMAZ 05 and Kona qualification and sub-10 fast – and cute as a bonus). Also there were Rich Strauss (of Crusible Fitness) and his wife, and Rich of wheelbuilder.com and his girlfriend. It was great to talk to them and just relax. Rich of wheelbuilder.com remembers you, Libor :) . Definitely good people, and a great time.

Ended up not getting much sleep last night either… seems like about 3 hours is gonna be my limit this weekend. At least sleep isn’t important in taper time :-/ and I will be better about it for the rest of the week. I didn’t feel the lack on the 10 mile run today at all. In fact, I got a bit excited and went a bit hard (it might be the fastest pace I’ve ever held for a run that long – was sub-10 min miles) but my knee and food both felt great! I have a theory on that it relates to how just awesome my weekend was outside of tris and in them =)

a local inspiration

I bike commuted today… yes, crazy, eh? It had been almost 3 months! But I wanted to get back on so I did.

On the train, I overheard a lady telling a story about a close family friend. Her friend does triathlons, and recently missed one since she got hit by a car and hurt her knee! The lady also said how the women was a great inspiration for all. This lady bikes to work… in fact, she doesn’t even own a car! She has also dropped an amazing amount of weight, and made the tri thing not a fad but a true lifestyle. I could feel the pride as she talked, and smiled as the story sounded familiar to me. I turned, and started listening more obviously. A second later, the lady mentioned how Lisa is just a great, wonderful person, and how much she likes her photograpy (and how she thinks her oldest son should marry her). I grinnned. “Lisa Gonzales?” The lady looked a bit surprised, and smiled. I was right! I guessed the name of the day’s heroine!

So on the train this morning I met Mindy’s mom (I think it was Mindy…). She had nothing but wonderful things to say about Lisa, and I loved hearing the story of a fellow wonderful triathlete being used as morning inspiration!

And I bike commuted, and it felt good. I will have to do it more often. Then I wondered if taper time was the right time to get back into it… but hey, part of why I commuted was that there is finally a 45-90 minute ride in my schedule, and I figure 2 40-50 minute rides will count.

pretty accurate horoscope…

Have you been walking or exercising too much lately, Kylie? If so, you might be experiencing aching feet and leg muscles today. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and stay off your feet as much as you can in order to allow the strains to heal. At some point you might want to relax in a hot tub or jacuzzi – preferably with a romantic partner! This is a great way to turn a disadvantage into a great time! Enjoy!”

And I read that right after talking to my roommate about how I think I need to get a massage this week! Must mean I do. However, I’ll selectively ignore the part about staying off my feet (although today will probably just be swimming — and I skipped the hot tub at the end). Now I just need to find the romantic partner… although I’d rather go for a crazy bike ride with him :P

geekery

I now have a system tray icon (those little ones by the clock in Windows) that looks like a Trifuel flame. And if I hold the mouse over it, a little box tells me the exact countdown to Vineman. If I right-click on it, I get the options of showing or hiding the actual application (which is just a countdown box that appears on the desktop) or exiting. Woo! I’m pretty excited. Especially since it will be very easy to customize for other races. I could do whatever icons I want, and countdowns to any dates and then any titles (right now the application titlebar says “Vineman”. In fact, I might write a program so that all I do is enter the new title and date, and maybe icon, and it makes a countdown for me.

Yes, I would be willing to share little applications for other races. It’s just a small exe that doesn’t take much processor time (so far as I have seen, and it shouldn’t really). =) Lisa, if you need a Vineman one I could email it to ya ;)
